Description

Scourge of the North

Europe in the last centuries of the Dark Age was beset by Scandinavian raiders. Their longships sailed the high seas, reaching lands as far as the Volga and North America. While mainly known for their pillaging, the Vikings were also explorers, traders, and colonists.

This is a solitaire game. You lead a band of warriors with their ships and weapons. Units represent historical Viking leaders such as Leif Erikson and Harald Hardrada. You can recruit elite huskarls and fanatic berserkers, and build more longships. You are in pursuit of gold, glory, and new lands to settle on a map running from Russia to Vinland, from Scandinavia to the fabled lands of the Byzantine Empire.

Saga cards send you on four different voyages of discovery and quest fulfillment. Voyage cards bring in special actions such as forming a shield wall in combat and ending the game with a Viking funeral.

Game Contents:

• One 11×17 inch game board

• 40 die-cut 1/2-inch counters

• 8-page system rules booklet

• 4 mission cards

• 14 event cards

5 of 5 Well varied experience, very narrative June 6, 2018

"Vikings" sets a new standard in the "Mini"-series. While taking some aspects from the "Commando"-ruleset it enriches the whole gameplay with many more decisions to take: You have to keep an eye on your "Edda" (fame), recruit warriors and ships to transport them, can appeal to the High King for goodies, choose "old" or "new" religion etc. The game feels very fluid and organic, not at all abstract. Four Jarls with different strenghts and random deployment of quests on the world map guarantee a new experience for every play. The cards alsohelp for a varied experience. You can play just one "Saga" (of four) or link them together to a long, dangerous campaign.
The game is well researched and feels very narrative. The components are excellent.
A very refined solitaire-experience and my new highlight in the series.
